The Sound of Global

Warming

  • David Dunn's The Sound of Light in Trees is a mind-blowing "acoustic ecology" of life inside a beetle-occupied pinyon pine.

  • On his website for the CD, David has separated out the audio files so you can hear the sounds of individual beetles as well as an uninvaded tree.

  • David and his collaborator, physicist James Crutchfield, developed their ideas of insect-driven climate change in a paper they wrote at the Santa Fe Institute in 2007. In it, they explain how their interest in sound provides new thinking about and possibly new solutions to the ongoing massive loss of forest to bark beetles and other insects.
